Moorthy is a seasoned expert in materials characterisation, metallurgical investigation, and non-destructive testing (NDT) with over three decades of experience. He holds a Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Bombay (1995–1999) and has contributed significantly to the field through roles at premier institutions, including the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, where he specialised in testing nuclear materials, and Newcastle University, where he has led research on advanced electromagnetic NDT methods, contact fatigue testing, and residual stress analysis using X-ray diffraction. Moorthy is also a pioneer in developing novel magnetic techniques like Magnetic Barkhausen Noise and Harmonic Analysis for evaluating ferritic steel components.
